One unexpected benefit of the COVID era was the rapid expansion of research on virtual therapy. Studies now suggest that EMDR delivered through telehealth can effectively reduce PTSD, anxiety, and depression symptoms, making remote EMDR a promising option for many clients (Lenferink et al., 2024). Research on somatic therapies also shows meaningful improvements in trauma symptoms, and many body-based techniques—such as grounding, breathwork, and nervous system regulation—adapt well to online sessions (Brom et al., 2017). For many people, receiving trauma therapy from the comfort of home can actually increase their sense of safety and support the healing process.

Some people choose to pay out of pocket for therapy to maintain greater privacy, avoid receiving a mental health diagnosis, or work with a therapist who isn’t on insurance panels. This can be especially important for individuals in careers with strict reporting requirements—such as aviation or military deployment—where a documented mental health diagnosis might impact their employment status. Private pay offers flexibility in scheduling, treatment approach, and session length without insurance restrictions, allowing for faster access, uninterrupted care, and a therapist who feels like the right fit. Many see it as a meaningful investment in their well-being and performance.

You’re welcome to cancel or reschedule appointments at no charge with at least 48 hours’ notice. For late cancellations a $50 fee may apply and cancelations within an hour of session or no-show sessions are subject to the full fee for session. Please note that insurance will not cover late fees and this will be the responsibility of the client. I understand that unexpected things come up, so once per year, I’ll gladly waive one late cancellation. Your time is valuable, and so is the sustainability of this practice—thank you for understanding and honoring this policy.

Because of licensing rules, I can only do therapy with folks who are in the state where I’m licensed. I am a licensed clinical social worker (LICSW) based out of Minnesota. Unfortunately, this also extends to those who are in a self-pay status.
